Sam Harris and Bart Ehrman Chat Christianity, Open Phones on Many Topics

Spent a little time on some comments made in an interview between Sam Harris and Bart Ehrman at the beginning of the program (after just a few minutes noting Jim Wallis’ extolling of James Cone) and then moved to calls. Spent way too much time trying to deal with a super technical call (I went back to it later when I was able to grab the relevant commentary from my system), and had to move past another call simply because I have not read the book being discussed and have stayed out of one particular theological controversy (shocking!).  Managed to get through the others though!  90 minutes.

A Short Reply to Brian Abasciano on John 3:16

James N. Anderson has replied to Abasciano here.

I want to briefly illustrate Abasciano’s co-text myopia.

Abasciano claims that πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων (pas ho pisteuōn, “whoever believes”) grammatically conveys indefiniteness. It actually does not, at least as it is realized in this particular discourse of John.

If Abasciano wants to be consistent then he must conclude that John is teaching that everyone believes in something, qua belief, regardless of what someone believes. So someone could believe in the tooth fairy, according to Abasciano’s insistence of disconnecting the notion of indefiniteness from its co-text delimiters.

Abasciano and Arminians isolate the phrase πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων. But the entire subject of the clause is not πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων; rather it is πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν. They conveniently leave out εἰς αὐτὸν.

Next time you listen to an Arminian, notice how they break up the subject of this clause by disconnecting and isolating πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων from εἰς αὐτὸν.

This rules out the tooth fairy since it refers to those (not indefinite) who believe in Jesus.

In short, this point in John 3:16 is teaching the object of belief, not the originator of belief.

Alan E. Kurschner

Interview with Michael Brown on His New Book, Second Hour: James Cone’s Theology Reviewed

Two hour long program today that is really two very different programs. First hour Michael Brown joins me via Skype to talk about his new book, Playing with Holy Fire.  I had been on Michael’s program last week on the same topic.  Then, after an hour, we moved on to the discussion prompted by the death this past weekend of Dr. James H. Cone, one of the authors of Black Liberation Theology.

California’s Totalitarianism, Then Calls on Racialism, JWs, OT Scholarship, and Much More

Started off discussing AB 2943 in California and the moral and ethical insanity consuming our society.  Then we went to calls with the first on the subject of racialism, then discussions of Jehovah’s Witnesses, OT scholarship, and many other topics.  80 minute program.

John 3:16 Again, Racialism, CBGM, Peterson/Shapiro Dialogue

Covered a TON of important material today.  Started off responding to an Arminian attempt to spin the discussion of John 3:16 and the phrase πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων (every one believing).  Then we moved on to some developments on the racialism front.  From there we switched gears and addressed the claim that CGBM will cause all of the past three hundred years of textual critical work to be thrown in the trash bin.  And then finally we played the entirety of the Jordan Peterson/Ben Shapiro dialogue on Christianity and Judaism, interacting with it and hopefully providing some important balance.  A ton of stuff for everyone today!
