The whole program today is oriented toward the text of Scripture and how it has been transmitted to us today. I particular focused upon the history of the NT text in the King James Version and relevant issues to the so-called “Ecclesiastical Text” movement of the modern day.
A few years back I posted an article explaining the weak textual evidence of Luke 23:34a, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
This week is Good Friday and many sermons will be using this verse, so I think it is appropriate to bring awareness of its textual nature.
Whether you agree with me or not, pastors and Christians should still be aware of this textual issue and its larger theological implications, especially the important question of whether forgiveness is conditional or unconditional.
Covered a pretty wide range today, starting with Mike O’Fallon talking about the upcoming Reformation Tour in Europe in September. Then we moved on to my debate invitation for David Allen. Then we played a video from Catholic Answers on why Mary is called “woman” by Jesus, demonstrating what happens when you deny sola scriptura. Then we looked at a Muslim video on the crucifixion of Jesus, and finished off with a KJVO conspiracy theory that I am preparing the world for the mark of the Beast (which I might add, according to two papyri copies of Revelation, is 616, not 666).
Covered a WIDE range of topics today. Started off expressing our deep condolences to Tony Bartolucci and his family in the death of his daughter Giana. Then we discussed the debate we will be doing tomorrow at 4pm with representatives of the Hebrew Israelite movement. Moved from there to a discussion of Jeremiah 34:16 and Romans 13:9 and King James Onlyism. Then we discussed the Pope escaping his handlers again and proclaiming live-in cohabitations valid marriages, and finally spent a good half an hour or more on the “Eternal Functional Subordination” controversy, spending some time reading from Reymond’s Systematic Theology as well. A wide variety of topics, to be sure!
I mentioned some links I was going to include to K. Scott Oliphint’s discussions of the assets of the Son. They are found here and here.
Started off reviewing this article about Psalm 33 and noting that the Arminian author sort of skipped over the actual text that I was referring to. Then we took some time to read some quotes from Evangelical Exodus and discuss the fact that synergistic Thomism is a pretty fertile field out of which to grow Romanists. And then we finished up with a lengthy discussion of the Comma Johanneum and the ET/TRO folks who dwell in the Reformed Pub (and elsewhere). Quite the range of topics once again!
