Calls on all sorts of topics from folks hiding in their bunkers, including a call on the Trinity and how to encourage a church to take it more seriously, witnessing to a Mormon missionary who is headed home, Hebrews 7:25, and covenant theology. There was more, but Rich and I are too old to remember to jot down the topics! We intend to be back again tomorrow with another program!
Ran through some quick discussions of a few topics in the first half hour, and then took calls in the second. Covered a few Francis the Marxist stories, and then looked briefly at Ken Wilson’s anti-Calvinist polemic (dressed up as a work of history), The Foundation of Augustinian-Calvinism. Then pointed folks to a new resource for Qur’an studies, Fadel Soliman’s Bridges’ Translation of the Ten Qira’at of the Noble Quran. Went to the phones with calls on teaching teens apologetics, church history, reaching Mormons, etc.
I wish there was a way for me to easily make notation of all the topics when we do open phones, but alas, I have not mastered that skill. So we talked about Mormonism and textual criticism and inerrancy and even a call about the Christian view of medical intervention for someone who is truly (genetically) intersexed! Also had a long call about resources on church history. So, a little something for everyone on today’s program!
No, I wasn’t going for the perfect number, it just turned out that way. But we looked at a video of a BYU professor talking about the removal of homosexuality from the honor code, and how this is related to one’s “testimony of the Brethren.” Fascinating days in Utah! Then we talked about Doug Wilson’s comments on the Christianity Today article about polyamory, and followed that up with a look at an ultra woke series of tweets from a writer at TheWitness, then had some comments on Bernie Sanders, communism, and the worldview implications of his presidential bid. Moved into a longer discussion of Christology in reference to Derek Thomas’ sermon that G3 chose not to post, specifically considering kenosis and kenotic theology, and related issues. Briefly mentioned the atrocities being committed by Boko Haram in Nigeria, was about to sign off and then remembered the issue of theonomy in light of a meme floating around featuring a few words from Toby Sumpter. Ended up going another 25 minutes on that challenging topic. So quite a range of topics on today’s program!
Reported on the past week up in Salt Lake City, the witnessing at the Conference, and the two debates and one dialogue as well. Lots of background information and side stories! Then at the end I looked at the result of the “hug heard round the world” in Dallas and the entire mantra of “black forgiveness,” looking at James Cone’s horrific words that seem to be part and parcel of the “woke church,” “…blacks must treasure their hostility, bringing it fully into consciousness as an irreducible quality of their identity” (_Black Theology and Black Power_, p. 144).
