The following I snatched from PowerLine (I was going to grab the original LA Times story, but they basically wanted a sample of DNA for their “free” registration, which obviously would have resulted in enough spam to fill a U-Haul, so I skipped it), and it makes me ill:
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Friday that his party would wield the Terri Schiavo case against Republicans in the 2006 and 2008 elections, but for now needed to stay focused battling President Bush on Social Security.
“We’re going to use Terri Schiavo later on,” Dean said…
“This is going to be an issue in 2006, and it’s going to be an issue in 2008,” Dean told about 200 people at a gay rights group’s breakfast in West Hollywood, “because we’re going to have an ad with a picture of Tom DeLay saying, ‘Do you want this guy to decide whether you die or not? Or is that going to be up to your loved ones?’ ”
Dean, a practicing physician until he became governor of Vermont in 1991, added: “The issue is: Are we going to live in a theocracy where the highest powers tell us what to do? Or are we going to be allowed to consult our own high powers when we make very difficult decisions?”
Now I confess, all I can hear when I think of Dean is “the Dean scream,” but beyond that, this man is simply frightening. Yes, it is sad that those promoting a culture of death would seek to use the murder of Terry Schiavo for political gain amongst the leftists of this nation. Yes, it is sad he was speaking at a “gay rights breakfast” (how many years till his ilk are speaking at paedophile rights breakfasts, or necrophile rights breakfasts–why not adulterers’ rights breakfasts or liars’ rights breakfasts?), pandering once more to the extremists. All of that is quite true.
But what is really troubling about this whole thing is the unchallenged suppression of Christian rights that underlies the whole mess. Such was illustrated with painful clarity once again recently on the FOX News morning program where Juan Williams of NPR appears as a guest (thankfully always sitting next to Bill Kristol, who runs him over with logic and rationality on a regular basis). The discussion was of the blocking of judicial nominees based upon their religious faith–any religious faith, as long as it actually impacts one’s worldview. Williams, like Dean, clearly believes the government must hold as its norm of orthodoxy pure, unfettered, God-hating, morality shredding secularism. As he talked about religious judges he said they had to have the ability to judge separately from, and unhindered by, their religious beliefs. The man hasn’t a clue that he is just as religious as I am: his religion is secularism. His god is his brain, or his philosophy, or science, or something. But he is a raving secular fundamentalist, just like Howard Dean. Look at the quote above. The new “talking point” for the Democrats, who obviously expect their followers to be completely ignorant of the history of this nation, the beliefs of the Founders, etc., is that to allow religion to have any place in “culture” is to create a “theocracy” (wow, the idea of a ruling God–how the unregenerate heart hates such an idea!). And then you have this incredible statement, “Or are we going to be allowed to consult our own higher powers when we make very difficult decisions?” What higher powers would that be? Higher than the top of Dean’s head, anyway?
The Secularist Jihad is upon us, folks. Turn on the TV and listen. Challenge their power and they will come down on you with a zeal only the Inquisition has ever matched. And is the church ready to fight such a battle? I guess that depends on how you define “church.” If by that we mean the empty shell of pseudo-evangelicalism that curled up into the fetal position over the past few weeks and could muster little more than, “Gospel, what gospel?”, I would have to say, “No.” The Christian worldview is, quite simply, too radical to be held by those who have no confidence in the power of God in the gospel. Openly confessing that you believe a Galilean carpenter 2000 years ago was God incarnate, that He preached a hard-hitting, life-changing, no compromise, “here’s heaven, here’s hell, repent now” message, went resolutely to a cross to die for the sins of His people, rose again the third day and is returning, and is the Lord of your every breath and thought and action, isn’t for the spineless, especially when you are facing the red-faced zealots of secularism. But those whose hearts have, in fact, been changed, not by an “add-on” religion of churchianity, but by the sovereign work of the Spirit of God, have this promise:
“When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” (Luke 12:11-12 NASB)
