When I first spoke to John Cooper about his song, Terrify the Dark, I brought up the line that had struck my mind upon first hearing it. “My doubt will answer to your scars.” Seven words. But they invoke so many central realities of the faith. When you think it through, the Christ event is everything in the faith: the Incarnation, the Ministry, the Passion, the Death, the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Enthronement. Everything else is prologue and epilogue to the drama of redemption itself, the God-Man accomplishing the will of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The desire of the prophets, looking forward. The light of the tomb, guiding us to this very day. And when Jesus showed His hands and His feet to Thomas, He bore the scars and invited Thomas’ doubt to crash upon the rocks of the reality of His resurrection. It remains the same today. The light that shined from that tomb upon the scars of the Risen One continues to guide us today, no matter how hard the dark struggles to overcome it. I am so thankful it is not up to me to produce that light. I simply have to walk in it.
